NRMS FOOTBALL: LIONS SWEEP MT. ORAB

Sept. 16th, Western Brown HS - On Wednesday the New Richmond Middle School football teams traveled to Brown County to take on the Mt. Orab MS Broncos. Both of the Lions teams returned with impressive victories.

In the seventh grade game the Lions posted a 12-0 shutout using a stingy defense and an offensive passing attack that continues to surprise their opponents.
The Lions scored their first touchdown on a 20 yd pass from quarterback Darren Porter to Damon Abner. Their second score came by way of a five yard run by Kyle Weeks.
Defensively, Derek Gelter and Matt Blome recorded interceptions for New Richmond and Deon DeRose and Eric Scholz both had fumble recoveries.
Ass.'t Coach Rick Mahan praised both the offensive and defensive lines for their dominate performances. Said Coach Mahan, "It all starts in the trenches."

In the eighth grade matchup, the Lions trailed by six late in the game when Cody Catron stole the ball from the Bronco runningback and took it 58 yards for the game tying touchdown. Blake Thompson added the deciding two point conversion on a dive play with under two minutes to go.
On the ensuing possession, Head Coach Deron Shinkle's defense stopped the Broncos on a big fourth down attempt. Starting quarterback Levi Simpson then ran two sneaks and then took a knee twice to run out the clock as the Lions moved to 1-1 on their young season.

The Lions first touchdown was scored by Blake Thompson when he pulled down a halfback pass attempt and ran 61 yards to the endzone with 42 seconds remaining in the first half.

Coach Shinkle added, "Great game by everyone. In true Lions tradition, no one conceded defeat."
