Lions dominate wrestling sectional

The 2012 Div. II sectional wrestling champions.

The Lions dominated the Div. II sectional wrestling tournament at Western Brown High School with seven champions, five second place finishers and a third place and set a sectional record 290 team points.

The team total was the highest of any Div. II sectional winner in the state and 21 points more than defending state champion St. Paris Graham, the only other Div. II school in the state with seven sectional champions.

Lions lead after first night of wrestling sectional

New Richmond led the team standings after the first night with 82.5 points, ahead of Bethel-Tate with 64 and Wyoming with 53. Host Western Brown was in fourth place with 44 points and Taylor was No. 7 with 35 points. New Richmond had 13 wrestlers post quarterfinal victories, including top seeds Brody Hooks (113), Austin Skaggs (120), Cory English (160), Nathan Dixon (220) and J.R. Forsee (285). Lady Lions Move on in Sectional Tournament

The Lady Lions Girls Basketball Team won their first round tournament game last night defeating Ross 42-20. The girls dominated defensively allowing only 5 points in the first half. The defense fueled the offense allowing Bailey Workman to lead all scorers with 15 points, most of which came on easy transition baskets. Josie Buckingham controlled the game on both ends scoring 11 points, gathering 11 rebounds and blocking 7 shots. Courtney Grogan was a solid contributor on both ends as well scoring 10 points and grabbing 3 steals. The Lady Lions move on to face Talawanda Wednesday, Feb 22 at 7:30.

NR Basketball V CCD

The Lions basketball program pulled three wins out VS visiting Cincinnati Country Day on Tuesday night.

The Varsity boys basketball team won by a score of 75-62. Leading the way for the Lions were Sophomore John Ernst with 21 points and 11 rebounds, Senior Nick Hill had 12 points, Junior Evan McKinley pitched in 11 points and Senior Jake Gundler had 9 points. Senior Tucker Hawkins had 5 assists. The Lions close out their regular season on Friday at Home against Goshen. Come support Nick Hill, Jake Gundler, and Tucker Hawkins as they play in their final home game.

The JV boys team won 50-27. Very balanced scoring attack and a great win for the team.

The Freshman boys team won 66-9. Chris Mazzaro had a career high of 24 points.

SUPER WEEKEND OF SWIMMING AT SECTIONALS FOR BOTH BOYS & GIRLS

On Friday night, the boys did a great job competing at the swim sectionals! The 200yd. Medley Relay team, consisting of Colt Reese, Grant Gilman, Alex Ariapad & Tyler David, finished in 6th place at Mason. The Relay Team advances to the District Swim meet (on Friday, Feb 17th) in 20th place overall. The 200yd. Free Relay consisting of Colt Reese, Derek Gelter, Tyler David, & Alex Ariapad finished in 4th place at Mason. They advanced to the District swim meet on Friday in 15th place overall. Tyler David made it to the District swim meet in the 500yd. Free with a time of 5:23.71. He finished in 4th place at Mason and 15th place overall in the District Tournament. Alex Ariapad, who qualified and swam in Districts last year, is returning this year to the District Tournament in the 100yd. Butterfly with a time of 1:00.15. He finished in 11th place at Mason and 24th place overall in the District Tournament. The Boys' District Tournament is on Friday, Feb. 17 at Miami University at 10:45 a.m.

The girls made New Richmond Swimming history by qualifying for Districts in the 200yd. Free Relay. The 200yd. Free Relay team consists of Megan Woolum, Ashlee Lewis, Jessica Nazareth, & Kara Burns and they finished in 10th place at Mason. They advanced to the District swim meet on Saturday in 21st place overall. Kara Burns is returning to the District swim meet in the 500yd. Free and the 100yd. Breaststroke. She finished in 11th place at Mason in the 500yd. Free and she is 20th place overall in the District Tournament. She finished in 12th place at Mason in the 100yd. Breaststroke and 24th place overall in the District Tournament. Great job by all the girls at the Sectional swim meet! The Girls' District Tournament is on Saturday, Feb. 18 at Miami University at 10:45 a.m.




The Lions Wrestling program sweeps the Junior High and Varsity SBAAC league titles...

We want to take time to congratulate the JH Wrestling program, Coach Smiddy and Coach Dees on their league title Friday night @ CNE! The New Richmond wrestling winning tradition starts at the youth level/birth and is advanced through the JH to the high school. It takes all the coaches and parents at every level to achieve success on the mat, thank you for all your dedication!

The Varsity Lions pounded out another SBAAC title last night. If you haven't been counting that is three in a row! The Lions started strong and finished strong with five champs, four second place finishers, a third and two fourth place finishers! It took fourteen wrestlers, hard work, dedication and the undying support of our fans to bring home the title.

Congratulations to our five league champs: Brody Hooks, Austin Skaggs, Kyle Weeks, James White and JR Forsee. Our four second place finishers: Cody Gabelman, Robbie Lemar, Clay Loadman and Nathan Dixon. Third place finisher Tyler Loyd and our two fourth place finishers: AJ Rostetter and Luke Hoskins. Thanks to the contributions of Chris Klinker and Ryle Beckerich we achieved our third title in a row! Great job men!

Next week we start the sectional tournament @ Western Brown Friday & Saturday. The Lions will be in search of their third sectional title in a row and looking to advance fourteen wrestlers to the district tournament. WE ARE NR!!
