Alex Lewis gets rousing sendoff

Alex Lewis and his mother Becky Lewis are off to Canton for Friday and Saturday's state swimming meet.

New Richmond High School senior Alex Lewis was given a rousing sendoff to the state swimming meet Thursday by the staff and students at the high school.

Click on the Play button below to watch the sendoff.

Lewis and his mother, high school secretary Becky Lewis, left immediately after the hallway pep rally to Canton where Lewis will be the No. 1 seed in the Division II 100-yard butterfly after posting a state-best time of 51.24 seconds in last week's district swim meet at Miami University. His time was .3 seconds faster than the next best time among the 24 swimmers who qualified in the butterfly event.

Lewis also will compete in the 100-yard freestyle at Canton after posting the 15th best time in the district. That time is misleading as Lewis was placed in the slow heat at the district after posting a slow time in the sectionals due to illness.

"I won my heat but there was no one near me and I wasn't pushed," said Lewis, who was rarely pushed during dual meets this season. "I think I can move up the pack in the 100 free."

Lewis will work out tonight at Canton's C.T. Branin Natatorium and then swim in the Division II prelims beginning at 5 p.m. Friday. The Division II finals begin at 5 p.m. Saturday.

The 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard freestyle events are swam back-to-back with only a 15 minute break.

But unlike the sectionals when he was weak after recovering from an illness, Lewis goes to Canton in top shape.

"I'm feeling strong now," he said. "I should be OK doing both."

GREAT 2 WEEKENDS OF SWIMMING

The boys and girls swim team have spent a lot of time in the pool area the last 2 weekends. The boys sectional tournament was on Friday Feb. 12 and all the swimmers had their best times. The 200 yd. medley relay made up of Blake Beckett, Mark Miller, Alex Lewis, and Jacob Singleton made it to District in 19th place. The 200 yd. Freestyle Relay made up of Robbie Workman, Alex Ariapad, Mark Miller, and Alex Lewis made it to District in 16th place. Alex Lewis did us all proud by being the 1st place finisher in the 100 yd. Freestyle and 2nd place finisher in the 100 yd. Butterfly. It was a good night for the boys swim team. This is the 2nd year in a row that we have placed a relay team to district and the 1st time that we were able to take 2 relays. It was so much fun.

The girls swim team went to sectionals on Sat., Feb. 13 and they had their best times. Kara Burns made it to Districts as an alternate in the 100 yd. Breaststroke. It was a fun day for everyone.

On Friday, Feb. 19 the 6 boys traveled to Miami University to swim and did a great job. The 200yd. Medley Relay went from 19th place to 16th place and that consisted of Blake Beckett, Mark Miller, Alex Lewis, and Jacob Singleton. The 200 yd. Freestyle Relay went from 16th place to 12th place and beat New Richmond's school record in this event. It was a great day for the young men. Alex Lewis then put the icing on the cake by coming in 1st place in the 100 yd. Butterfly out of the top 24 swimmers. He then came right back in the 100 yd. Freestyle and placed 6th. He is heading for state and will do a great job of representing the New Richmond Swim program.

All the swimmers have had a great year and we look forward to see them again next year.

I will blog back in next week after the state meet to let you know how Alex Lewis placed.

Boys Basketball Sectional Game vs Roger Bacon

The boys basketball team played Roger Bacon, the #1 team in the city of Cincinnati, last night and lost by a score of 76-37. The Lions played tough defense but had trouble boxing out their two 6'8" post players and their swarming defense caused 27 turnovers which resulted in 31 points. The lions did not give up however and continued playing hard. The lions conclude their season Wednesday Night at Home against CCD. Come out and support these guys that have put so much effort into improving. (Note: There is no freshman game against CCD)

The Freshman Boys start their post season tournament tonight at Western Brown High School. The Lions had a first round bye and play the winner of last night's CNE-Blanchester game. Game time is at 8:00.

The Lions Pounce on First Place @ Sectionals.

The Lions wrestling team captures the sectional title last night @Goshen. The Lions were lead by sophomore Brody Hooks placing first. Seniors Andrew Nealan and Brian Gelter continued their quest for state, Andrew placed second and Brian placed fourth. JR Forsee and Austin Skaggs placed second, Cody Gableman and Kevin Reid placed third, Sam Anderson and Lance Houser placed fourth, Brandon Mues and Clay Loadman placed fifth, Robbie Lemar, Luke Hoskins and Ryan Zawacki placed sixth. Just in case you haven't been counting that is the whole team, they all placed top six! What a team effort, the hours of training, hard work and dedication have payed off big for these Lions!

The Lions wrestled their way into first place after the third round and never looked back. The Lions seemed to do their best wrestling in the third period. They were losing several matches late and pulled off upset victories time and again. The Lions varsity lineup consists of six freshmen, five sophmores, one junior and two seniors. The Lions won the tournament by 29 points over Goshen and 43 points over Wilmington.

Nine Lion wrestlers will be moving on to districts next week @ Goshen. Wrestling starts Friday @ 2pm. Thanks for all your support of the wrestling program. WE ARE NR!!
