Varsity Volleyball

The lady lions were defeated by Batavia Saturday in two out of three games. We lost 26-24 and 25-18 and won 1 game 27-25. The second Match was played with Mariemont and we were defeated 25-22 and 25-16. The lady lions will play again at home on Tuesday 9/8 against Fayetteville.

New Richmond Girls CC Team Finishes 1st, Boys Finish 2nd at Hillsboro Invitational

The girls and boys cross country teams both had a great showing at the Hillsboro Invitational at Liberty Park this past Saturday, September 5th.  The girls team finished 1st, winning by a tiebreaker (6th runner).  The boys team finished 2nd overall with junior Timmy Hall winning the boys race with his closest competitor nearly 30 seconds behind him.  Top finishers for the lions included:

Lions defeat Mariemont, 31-7


Garrett Myers and Brian Mazzaro connected on two touchdown passes and Myers rushed for two more to lead the Lions to 31-7 win over Mariemont Friday night at New Richmond.

Myers threw touchdown passes of 31 and 32 yards to Mazzaro and rushed for 104 yards in 15 carries and two touchdowns to lead the Lions to their second straight win to open the 2009 season.

With the defense keying on Andrew Nealan, last week's WLWT player of the week, senior tailback Mike Maupin made the Warriors pay by rushing for 123 yards in 13 carries. Nealan managed 52 yards in 12 carries and a touchdown.

Senior Brandon Branson led the Lions on defense with six tackles, including three for losses. Sophomore Jake Gundler picked off two Mariemont passes. Andy Case recorded 5 tackles, Austin Warden 4 and Gundler and Michael Skaggs three each for the Lions.

Girls soccer teams lose to Norwood

Both the jv and varsity teams had tough losses last night against Norwood. The jv score was 5-0 and the varsity score was 8-0. Even with the loss, both teams started off strong and managed to work on one-touch passing and communicating with their teammates. The Lady Lions play again on Tuesday at Bethel for another league game. JV will play at 5:00 with Varsity starting at 7:00.

LADY LIONS VARSITY VOLLEYBALL

Congratulations to the Lady Lions on an awesome victory against CNE last night. After winning the first game in overtime (29-27)the girls were fired up and came back pounding CNE in the second game 25-10 and then took it home for a victory in the 3rd game 25-19. It was an exciting match.

Heart breaker against Amelia

The boys lost to Amelia 1-0 in the last 1:30 of the game. It was a very well played game by both teams. Playing against a good Amelia team was good preperation for a tough league game against Bethel next Tuesday at home.

NR Lions CC Teams Compete in Hillsboro Invitational this Saturday

The girls and boys cross country teams will be competing in the Hillsboro Invitational this Saturday, September 5th. The invitational will actually be held at Liberty Park, which is just north of Hillsboro on St. Rt. 62. CC runners need to be at the school at 9:15 a.m. ready to board the bus for the invitational.

NR freshmen 21, Roger Bacon 6

Kevin Reid scored three touchdowns and rushed for more than 100 yards to lead the New Richmond freshman football team to a 21-6 win at Roger Bacon Wednesday.

The defense was led by Jake Preston with an interception and 6 tackles
and Alex Horn, whoalso had 6 tackles.

The next game for the NR freshmen will be at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9 at Anderson.

Andrew Nealan, Veronica Burnam take McDonald's honors


New Richmond senior Andrew Nealan and junior Veronica Burnam have been selected as WLWT's High School Playbook McDonald's Student Athletes of the Week. They will be featured during the television station's Friday night and Saturday morning high school sports reports.

Nealan, who gained 142 yards rushing and scored four touchdowns in last week's 61-14 win over Deer Park, also was named WLWT's "Primetime Performer" in an online vote this week. Nealan also is a two-time state qualifier in wrestling and a sprinter on the school's track team.

Burnam, a junior and a two-sport performer in the fall running cross country and playing soccer, finished 41st out of 218 runners in last Saturday's Wilmington Invitational Cross Country Meet. She also plays basketball and runs track for the Lions.

Freshman football adds game with Milford

The already tough schedule for the New Richmond freshman football team just got tougher with the addition of a home game against Milford at noon Saturday, Sept. 12.

Lions head coach Dan Scholz added another challenging game to the freshman schedule earlier this week when he announced Glen Este would come to New Richmond on Wednesday, Sept. 16 for a 6 p.m. game.

The Lions' 9th graders, who open the season at 5 p.m. today at Roger Bacon, will play at Anderson at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9 before hosting Milford and Glen Este. The Glen Este game will be followed by a game at Indian Hill at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 21.

"These games will show our kids what is needed to compete at a high level," said Scholz.

The scheduled game Sept. 28 was canceled by Clermont Northeastern due to lack of numbers on their freshman team.

The second half of the freshman football schedule has the Lions hosting Wyoming at 5 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 5 and Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy at 5:30 p.m. on Wedsnesday, Oct. 21 and playing at Goshen at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17 and at Western Brown at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 26.

Goshen and Western Brown are the only other Southern Buckeye Conference schools fielding freshman teams in 2009.

Lady Lions Varsity Soccer defeats CNE

Congratulations to the girls varsity soccer team for their 3-2 victory over CNE. The team was down by two at the half and came back to win! Savannah Glenn scored the three goals with assists from Kelsey Hensley and Sarah Glenn. Come support the Lady Lions on Thursday for their home opener when they take on Norwood.

Boys soccer defeats CNE, 1-0

The boys soccer team improved to 2-1 on the season after defeating CNE Tuesday night 1-0. Zak Gregory scored the winning goal.

Girls tennis 9/1

The girls tennis team was defeated by Western Brown 9/1 by a score of 3-2. Those players winning their matches were, Kody Blankenship 1st Singles and Casey White/Alex White 2nd Doubles. The Lady Lions travel to East Clinton on Thursday.

Varsity Volleyball

The Varsity Volleyball Team was defeated last night by Goshen 3 out of 4 games. 18-25, 25-19, 23-25, and 18-25. The team will play against Goshen again at home October 5. It will be a good match to watch.

Andrew Nealan is WLWT's "Primetime Performer"

Andrew Nealan's 142-yard rushing, four-touchdown performance in New Richmond's 61-14 win over Deer Park earned him WLWT's "Primetime Performer" honor for the first week of the Ohio high school football season.

Nealan, a 5-10, 175-pound senior, also caught one pass for an 18-yard touchdown and recorded 4 tackles on defense.

Bird, Woodruff in Wheeler's 'Schoolboy Legends' book

Two members of the New Richmond Lions Sports Hall of Fame are featured in segments in New Richmond author Lonnie Wheeler's new football book, "Cincinnati Schoolboy Legends."

Former Lions coach Ron Bird, who ranks 26th all time among coaches in Ohio will a career record of 209-111-5, and Dwayne Woodruff, who played for Bird in the mid-70s and went on to enjoy an 11-year career with the Pittsburgh Steelers, were selected by Wheeler and co-author John Baskin for their book about a hundred years of Cincinnati's most storied football players and coaches.

The book is available at area book stores and online at Orange Frazer Press.

Wheeler discussed his book and Bird and Woodruff during Monday's Lions Talk on www.newrichmond.localsportsradio.com.

Freshman football adds Glen Este

Another challenging game has been added to the New Richmond freshman football schedule with Glen Este coming to New Richmond on Sept. 16 for a 6 p.m. game.

The Lions' 9th graders, who open the season at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Roger Bacon, will play at Anderson on Sept. 9 before hosting Glen Este. The Glen Este game will be followed by a game at Indian Hill on Sept. 21.

Lion Golfers not on Par against Broncos

The Lions golf team fell to the Broncos by the score of 180-206. The match was played at Friendly Meadows Golf Course on 8/31. The medalists for the match were Kirkpatrick and Kidwell from Western Brown. They both shot 7 over par 43's. Leading the Lions in scoring were Junior Tyler Flood (47) and Freshman David Ohntrup (50). Other scores for the Lions were Matt Ryzdweski (54), Austin Wells (55), Evan McKinley (56), and Anthony Niederhelmen (58). The Lions next have a rematch against Goshen @ Friendly Meadows on 9/8.

Varsity Volleyball defeats Deer Park

Congratulations to the Lady Lions Varsity Volleyball on defeating Deer Park Saturday. They played 3 out of 4 games; 25-22, 25-27, 25-14, 25-17. A great job was done by all.

Lady Lions defeated by Finneytown Wildcats

After a rough game at Finneytown on Saturday, the girls varsity soccer team lost 4 to 1. Although we struggled the first half, we were able to keep the Wildcats from scoring the second half. Savannah Glenn scored the team's goal which was assisted by Sarah Glenn. The Lady Lions play again on Tuesday, September 1st at CNE.

Beacon Orthopaedics “Big Play of the Game”!

The double pass from Garrett Myers to Austin Warden to Joey McCabe was selected as WLWT's Beacon Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine's weekly "Big Play of the Game" for the first week of the football season.

Myers throws a lateral pass to Autin Warden, who then heaves it down field to McCabe for a 25-yard touchdown.
