Close Division Win for Lady Lions

The Lady Lions Girls Basketball Team defeated division rival Amelia at home last night by a score of 34-33. Amelia's tough zone defense collapsed on the inside and was effective in stopping the inside game throughout much of the game, but left shooters open on the outside. Sarah Shoemaker connected on 3 treys on her way to a game-high 13 points while Courtney Grogan hit 2 from long range to stretch the defense. Josie Buckingham scored 6 points but had 6 big blocks and 11 rebounds shutting down the inside for Amelia. Bailey Workman provided an offensive spark in the 4th quarter scoring all 6 of her points during the frame. The win improves their record to 6-1 in the SBAAC American and 12-3 overall. The team travels to Bethel-Tate for another tough division game Saturday 1-28.

On Thursday Jan. 19th the girls swim team beat Seven Hills and Summit Country Day by a score of 97-96-6. Sarah Austin from Seven Hills broke 2 pool records that were set by Indian Hill swimmers back in 2000. She broke the 200yd Freestyle 2:00.03 and the 100yd. Freestyle 56.50. The first time we swam Seven Hills she broke the 200yd. Individual Medley and the 500yd. Freestyle. Our 1st place finishers were: 500yd. Free - Kara Burns; 200yd. Varsity GBK Wins vs Williamsburg

The Varsity Girls Basketball Team defeated Williamsburg in an exciting come-from-behind victory at home last night, final score 43-40. After trailing by 13 points mid way through the 3rd quarter, the Lady Lions turned it around with solid defense and by knocking down shots on offense. Sarah Shoemaker scored 8 4th quarter points including two clutch threes and 2 free throws to ice the game. Josie Buckingham scored 19 points, collected 8 rebounds, and blocked 8 shots. Tina Lawrence contributed defensively holding the league's leading scorer (20.7 ppg) to only 7 points on the night. It was a great team win that brought Williamsburg's 8 game winning streak to an end. The win improves the Lions to 11-3 on the season. Next at home vs Amelia Thursday, 1/26/12.

Lions prove to be a "Hammer" at the Hammer and Anvil Tournament.

The Varsity Wrestling Lions battled to a second place finish Saturday at the Hammer and Anvil tournament. A strong field of teams from three states braved the weather to compete in the annual event. The Lions finished close behind Rochester, Michigan and once again showed why they are the team to beat in the area. The Lions placed twelve wrestlers and had two champions. Brody Hooks won the 113 lbs. pound class an JR Forsee won the 285 lbs. class. Cody Gabelman finished second, Austin Skaggs finished third, James White finished fourth, Clay Loadman, Kevin Reid and Nathan Dixon finished fifth, Tyler Loyd finished sixth, Ryan Zawacki, Cory English and Chris Klinker finished seventh. The Lions are getting better every week. Next up for the Lions is the Milford Invitational Friday and Saturday.

The JV Lions finished second also at the JV Hammer and Anvil. They finished behind Mason and in front of Hamilton and Colerain. Nathan Rostetter and Justin Patrick won their weight class. Branston Evans and Tristan Williams finished second, Will Lytle finished third, Rodney Berwanger, Kenny Booker, Corey Forsee and Lance Houser finished fourth. Next up is a Tri meet with Hillsboro and Wilmington 02/02 @NR. WE ARE NR!!

Busy Hall of Fame Weekend for the Boys Basketball Program

On Friday night the Varsity boys basketball team traveled north through sleet and snow to face league opponent Goshen. It was cold outside, but the Lions were red-hot on the hardwood. The Lions led early 15-6 but fell behind at half time 24-23. The lions battled back in the second half and were able to hold on the victory by a score of 60-54. Sophomore John Ernst led the Lions with 17 points and 9 rebounds. Senior Jake Gundler had 15 points and 3 assists. Junior Austin Wells had a career high of 11 points. Wells also nailed a crucial 3 pointer and added another 3 point play the old fashioned way late in the game to help pull away from Goshen.

On Saturday night, the Lions pulled off a victory against visiting Williamsburg high school by a score of 61-51 in overtime. The Lions fought through some adversity and were able to battle back in the second half after being down 27-21 at halftime. The Lions pulled even with Williamsburg in the 4th quarter and were able to get to overtime where the Lions would take over the game. Right from the tip, Junior Sam Leffler went in and scored a quick basket to pull the Lions ahead for good. Leffler scored a career high of 21 points and also added 4 steals. Sophomore John Ernst had 19 points and 13 rebounds. Senior Jake Gundler and Junior Austin Wells had 7 points. Tucker Hawkins added 5 assists.

The Lions JV beat Williamsburg by a score of 50-32. Dylan Adams had 16 points and Josh Heiden had 13 points.

The Lions travel to McNicholas high school on Tuesday night.

Lady Lions Win vs CNE

The Lady Lions Varsity Girls Basketball Team defeated CNE last night at home by a score of 42-33. After an up and down 1st half the girls exploded in the 3rd quarter, shutting out CNE 12-0. Josie Buckingham led the way scoring 17 points, collecting 9 rebounds, and blocking 10 shots. Mikaela Rupp and Bailey Workman scored 10 and 7 respectively to contribute to the win. The win improves their record to 5-1 in the the SBAAC-American and 10-3 overall. Next at home vs Williamsburg Monday, Jan 23.

Wrestling Lions roll over Amelia 67 to 9!!

The Lions traveled up 125 to challenge the Amelia Barons. The Lions wrestled like the #1 team in the city, winning 12 of the 14 matches. The JV team won 6 of 9 matches also. It's always good to dominate a league opponent weeks away from the SBAAC tournament.

Lady Lions lose in OT

The Lady Lions Varsity Girls Basketball lost a tough game in overtime @ Seton last night 74-72. After trailing by 15 at the half, the lady lions roared back keyed by good defense and capped off by a long 3 by Courtney Grogan to force overtime. In overtime, however, the girls could not find consistent offensive execution and could not hold on to an early overtime lead. The Lady Lions were led by Josie Buckingham who scored 33 points, collected 12 rebounds, and blocked 8 shots. Sarah Shoemaker added 12 points and 5 rebounds. Next at home vs CNE Thursday, Jan 19.

ALEX ARIAPAD MADE IT TO SWIM CLASSIC FINALS IN 50FLY

It was a great weekend of swimming for the New Richnmond swimmers. Alex Ariapad is the 4th swimmer from New Richmond to make it back to the finals in the 29 years that they have held the Swim Classic. He was successful in the 50yd. Butterfly with a time of 26.65 and improved his time Sunday night with a time of 26.57. There were 3300 swimmers competing at 8 different sites and the top 16 best times swam in the finals at Keating Natatorium. It is the largest swim meet held in the United States. Eight other New Richmond swimmers competed on Saturday and Sunday and did a great job improving their times.

Those competing were Grant Gilman, Alex Ariapad, Colt Reese, Tyler David, & Derek Gelter. They had their best times in the 200yd. Free Relay, 200yd. Medley Relay, 400yd. Medley Relay and the 400yd. Division Road Win for NR GBK

The New Richmond Varsity Girls Basketball Team got a big win vs a division opponent on the road last night defeating Goshen 41-27. The Lady Lions were led offensively by Josie Buckingham who scored 16 points and by Bailey Workman who added 9. The Lady Lions' defense powered them to victory led by Sarah Shoemaker and Mikaela Rupp who shut down the dynamic back court of Goshen. The win improves them to 9-2 on the season and 4-1 in the SBAAC American. Next @ Seton Tuesday, 1/17/12.

The Varsity Lions Wrestling team battled the Ross Rams tonight at the NR Wrestling Field House. It was Cold and it was definitely a War, Lions 42 Ross 17. The Lions left no doubt who the top team in the city will be when the new poll comes out. Jordan Hooks ignited the war with a 17-2 victory. Big brother Brody added more fuel to the fire with a 16-0 win. Austin Skaggs fanned the flames with a 17-4 victory. Cody Gabelman burned up his opponent with a 8-2 win. Chris Klinker pulled out all the stops but lost a tough match. Robbie Lemar started the fire again with a pin. Ryan Zawacki left it all on the mat but lost 4-0. Clay Loadman battled til the last second but lost a close match 6-4. Senior Cory English lit the fuse again with a pin. Kevin Reid attacked for six minutes and won 11-3. James White grenaded his opponent with a second period pin. Ryle Beckerich left his heart on the mat but came up a little short, 14-11. Nathan Dixon battled hard but lost in the second period. JR Forsee finished the War with a 9-6 win. The Lions proved to be too much for the cross town rivals!

The Lions also beat Madeira 75-6!

The JV team lost a close dual, 45-30. Next up for the JV is a home tournament Saturday.

Hall of Fame inductees announced

New Richmond High School has announced the 2012 inductees for the Lions Sports Hall of Fame.
They are Joe Hawkins, a 1955 graduate who won 13 letters and went on to play college baseball at The Ohio State University; Todd Wells, a 1989 graduate who was named Southern Buckeye Conference American Division coach of the year nine times; Jamie McCart, a 2000 graduate and four-time all SBAAC selection in cross country; and Amy McMillin, a 1994 graduate who holds 5 school records in softball.

They will be inducted at the annual New Richmond Lions Sports Hall of Fame banquet Saturday, Jan. 21. Tickets for the 6 p.m. banquet are $15 and reservations can be made by contacting New Richmond Athletic Director Doug Foote (foote_d@nrschools.org) at 553-3191 ext 10003.

Joe Hawkins

During his time at New Richmond High School, from 1952-1955, Joe Hawkins earned 13 letters; four each in Baseball and Volleyball, three in basketball, and two in track. Joe was a four-year starter in baseball and was named team captain of the basketball team. At this time New Richmond High School was participating independently so there were no All-League Honors or League Championships to record. Despite not being associated with a league or conference, Joe is one of a very select few in the history of New Richmond Athletes to earn an athletic scholarship to a Division I school, The Ohio State University. Joe played baseball for the Buckeyes for three years. Returning to his hometown, Joe was a partner in the development of the New Richmond Youth Football League in 1969 and coached youth football for nine years. Joe also coached and served as an official representative of New Richmond Knothole Baseball from 1965-1978.

Todd Wells

Todd, a 1989 graduate of New Richmond High School, received a varsity letter in soccer and wrestling his freshman year. The next summer, an automobile accident ended Todd’s high school athletic career, though he remained active in Troubadours and Theater. Upon graduation Todd attended the University of Cincinnati and was the lead student-athletic trainer with Coach Bob Huggins and the Men’s Basketball Team for two years and for the Men’s Soccer team. After completing his studies at Cincinnati, he returned to his Alma Mater to begin his career. He was the Middle School Athletic Director from 1993-1997 and the NRHS Boys Tennis Coach from 1994-2006. Todd amassed an impressive overall record of 148-35. He was nine times the American Division Coach of the Year. His teams were American Division Champions seven times and Runner-ups 5 times. He coached the first doubles team in NR and Clermont County to qualify for the state tennis tournament. During those same years (1994-2007) Todd served in the role of Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) for the district, a program which he started. As the first ATC in Clermont County, in 1999 Todd and New Richmond High School were recognized by the Ohio Athletic Trainers Association as a Model Athletic Training Program.

Jamie McCart

Jamie McCart excelled at track and cross country while a student at New Richmond High School from 1996-2000. All four years he was the top runner on the Cross Country team and was voted First Team All SBC. In 1998 and 1999 Jamie was league champion and Runner of the Year. In 1999 he was the district champion and was voted Runner of the Year Division II All City. Jamie was a two time state qualifier in 1997 and 1999 and was 2 seconds away from qualifying in 1998. Three times, Jamie was named Most Valuable Distance Runner on the Track Team and was Most Valuable Track Man his Junior and Senior years. He earned First Team All SBC Honors his Junior year. His senior year, Jamie won District in the 1600m and 3200m.

Amy McMillin

Amy McMillin was a four year Varsity Softball player from 1991 to 1994 and started in 75 games. A first baseman her freshman and sophomore years, she moved to short stop her remaining two years. Amy’s four year batting average was .441. She holds season records of Most Runs Scored (37) and Most RBI’s (34) and maintains career records of Most Runs Scored (103), Most Hits (109), and Most RBI’s (109). Notable accomplishments include being named 1st Team All SBC (1991, 1993, 1994), Rookie of the Year (1991), MVP (1993, 1994), All City 2nd Team Shortstop (1994) and was the USSSA Greater Cincinnati Player of the Year in 1993. Amy earned a full athletic scholarship to Southern State Community College and was the Offensive Most Valuable Player in 1994 and 1995. Amy’s senior year team won the school’s first SBC league title posting a 13-1 league record and a 16-1 regular season record. Amy is one of the pioneers of softball at New Richmond Varsity Fast Pitch Softball. She helped start a tradition of winning at NRHS that continues today.

Lady Lions Lose 2nd Straight

The New NR Girls Basketball team lost its 2nd straight game at Ripley last night 48-42. The girls had difficulty facing the full court man to man trap that Ripley used most of the night leading to 24 turnovers. The frustration on offense also led to a poor shooting night as well as poor decisions on the defensive end as the lions committed 21 fouls. Josie Buckingham led the way scoring 9 points and collecting 15 rebounds while Sarah Shoemaker had 7 points 4 rebounds and 3 steals. Lady Lions are next @ Goshen on Thursday 1/12/12.

New Richmond begins coaching search

New Richmond High School began a search for a new football coach Monday after losing two-time Southern Buckeye coach of the year Dan Scholz to Oak Hills High School.

Scholz, who compiled a record of 37-14 in five years at New Richmond including two league title and an appearance in the state playoffs, accepted the head coaching job at Oak Hills on Saturday.

Oak Hills is Ohio’s largest high school with an enrollment of 3036 according to the Ohio High School Athletic Association. Scholz replaces Kurry Commins who resigned following a 4-6 season in 2011. Oak Hills is a member of the Greater Miami Conference with Colerain, where Scholz was an assistant coach before being hired at New Richmond.

“We will begin the search for a new head coach today,” said New Richmond superintendent of schools Adam Bird.

"We are thankful for the time, energy and passion Coach Scholz gave to the student-athletes of NRHS. NR Football has a legacy and tradition of success and Coach Scholz did a great job adding to that tradition. We wish him success as he moves on to another challenge."

Scholz has been in high school coaching since 1994. He was at Dublin-Scioto from 1995-2000 and coached under Kerry Coombs at Colerain from 2001-2006 before taking over at New Richmond.

“Thanks for all of the support from all of the people who made New Richmond football a special place,” said Scholz.

“My 5 years of being the head football coach in New Richmond have been very good and rewarding. I would not have the opportunity to go to such a school as Oak Hills, and to coach in the biggest public school league in the city of Cincinnati, if it were not for the hard work and dedication of the NR assistant coaches and players that have played these last five years.”

New Richmond lost only five league game during Scholz’ five seasons as coach and hasn’t lost to a SBAAC school since Oct. 16, 2009.

“I believe the football program has a great foundation, and the players know that their leadership is needed now to continue on what we have built. Knowing that there are 10 players who have started at some point on both offense and defense, the 2012 Lions should be ready to continue to win championships and finally get to the undefeated season we have been pursuing.”

Oak Hills superintendent of schools Todd Yohey believes his selection committee picked the right coach to make Oak Hills competitive in the GMC.

"Our selection committee wanted a coach who had a vision for not only our high school program, but also middle school and our community youth teams," said Yohey. "We also wanted someone with a strong coaching background and experience who can build on our current foundation and begin a winning tradition for our community. Coach Sholz met all of our expectations and we look forward to a new direction at Oak Hills."

Varsity Wrestling Lions placed seventh at State Duals!

The morning started with an intense battle with Claymont, the #2 seed. The matches were close but the final score didn't show the effort, Claymont 60 Lions 15. The next test for the Lions was much closer. The Lions faced Padua in the second round. Padua took the early lead but the Lions came storming back. Brody Hooks and James White had impressive victories. The Lions fell a little short though, Padua 35 Lions 27. The final round matched the Lions against the #2 ranked team in the state, Walsh Jesuit. The Lions pulled off the upset, 48 to 34! The team pulled together and flexed their muscle. The Lions kept the pressure on through all fourteen matches. One by one they rose to the occasion and got the victory!

The New Richmond Boys Basketball teams won all three games in their triple header against Bethel Tate Friday Night.

The Varsity team won their game by a score of 61-39. After getting off to a slow start and leading at the half by a score of 22-19, the lions pushed forward in the second half by applying great defensive pressure and precise passing. The Lions were led by Senior Jake Gundler with 13 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Junior Sam Leffler pitched in 9 points and 4 steals. Senior Chris Turner had 8 points, Junior Austen Craig 8 points, and Sophomore John Ernst had 8 points and 14 rebounds. The win improves the Lions season record to 5-4 and 3-0 in the conference.

The JV team won by a score of 51-42. Trent English and Caleb Hayward each scored 10 points. Josh Heiden had 7 points.

The Freshman won by a score of 45-35. Chris Mazzaro had 13 points, and Jake Craig had 12 points. John Buckingham had 9 rebounds.

Lady Lions Fall to Western Brown

The Lady Lions Girls Basketball Team lost a close game to arch rival Western Brown Last NIght 44-43. The girls played fantastic defense for entire game holding Western Brown well below their season average as a team and holding one of the leagues top scorers to only 5 points on the night. After leading by 8 at half time and by 5 at the end of the 4th quarter the girls failed to execute offensively down the stretch committing unforced turnovers while failing to connect on open shots. Josie Buckingham led the way on offense leading all scorers with 21 points while collecting 12 rebounds. Lady Lions are next @ Ripley Monday December 9.

The Lions headed to Conner High School to compete in a super tri meet. The team started the evening with a 70-8 victory over Conner. Next up was the Ryle Raiders. The Lions started with a big win by JR Forsee. AJ Rostetter lost a tough match, Brody Hooks captured the next victory. Tristan Williams came up a little short, Austin Skaggs wrestled the returning Ky. state champ and lost a competitive match. Cody Gabelman lost a tight match 7-3. Robbie Lemar got the first takedown but couldn't hold the lead. Ryan Zawacki and Clay Loadman both lost by one point. Cory English got the Lions back on the winning way with a pin! Kevin Reid and James White followed Cory's lead with pins also. Ryle Beckerich lost a close match to a strong opponent. Nathan Dixon won by forfeit. Final score Ryle 39 NR 31.

The JV Lions wrestled Turpin, Conner and Ryle last night. The JV came up big with a dominating performance!

The Varsity will travel to Graham HS Sunday to do battle in the State Duals. Only the top eight teams in the state are invited, the action starts at noon, BE THERE!

Lady Lions Extend Win Streak to 8

The Varsity Girls Basketball Team trailed Madeira last night by 9 points going into the 4th quarter but refused to give up and rallied to a 49-47 victory. The Lady Lions had played 3 lackluster quarters and had been consistently frustrated by the zone defense and consistent shooting by Madeira but never lost their determination to win the game. The 4th quarter rally was fueled by 3 pointers by Courtney Grogan, Sarah Shoemaker, and Mikaela Rupp. The senior guards combined for 36 points scoring 11, 12, and 13 respectively. It was an exciting come-back victory fueled by solid defense and spectacular outside shooting. The girls play next Thursday, Dec. 5 at home.

Lions win in thriller fashion

The Varsity boys basketball team beat visiting Hughes Wednesday night by a score of 55-53. With the game tied at 53-53 with 5 seconds left, Senior NIck Hill picked the pocket of a Hughes player and sprinted down the floor to attempt the game winning lay-up. However, the defender came and altered the shot just enough for it to fall off the rim. However, with less than one second left, two New Richmond players were sprinting down the floor for New Richmond and Sophomore John Ernst went up and ripped the rebound off the rim. Ernst put in the lay-up with 0.2 seconds left on the clock to win the game. Ernst led the Lions with 13 points and 8 rebounds. Senior Nick Hill had 10 points and 5 assists, Junior Austen Craig had 10 points, Senior Jake Gundler had 9 points. All of the Lions pitched in for the victory. The student section was going crazy the whole night and was definitely our 6th man of the game. The lions get a well deserved break for the Christmas holidays and will be back in action January 3rd @ Mariemont. The next home game will be Friday, January 6th against Bethel Tate. The Lady Lions Girls Basketball team defeated Batavia last night by a score of 55-32 to improve their record to 7-0 on the season. Sophomores Josie Buckingham and Bailey Workman led the team offensively scoring 15 and 14 respectively. Mikaela Rupp added 11 points including 2 key 3 pointers during a key 3rd quarter that saw the Lady Lions expand its lead from 10 to 23. Sarah Shoemaker added 6 rebounds, 6 steals, and 3 assists. The game is the last of 2011 for the Lady Lions who play next vs Madeira after the Christmas Holiday break.

The Varsity Wrestling Lions placed eighth out of forty teams and first in the small school division.This is the toughest tournament in Cincinnati. Top teams from Cincinnati, Dayton, Columbus and Kentucky traveled to Harrison Sat/Sun to do battle. The Lions placed four wrestlers in the top eight but it was a team effort that won the title. Ryle Beckerich, Cody Gabelman, Kevin Reid, Ryan Zawacki, Luke Hoskins and Nathan Dixon had multiple wins over the two day tournament. Robbie Lemar and Kyle Weeks contributed also. Austin Skaggs placed seventh, Corey English placed sixth, JR Forsee placed third and Brody Hooks finished second!

The Lions were in the top 5 most of the tournament but a few tough losses late left them a few points behind Elder and in eighth place. Moeller won the large school division title. WE ARE NR!!

New Richmond swim coaches honored

A new scoreboard at the New Richmond High School pool was dedicated Dec. 18 in honor of Judy and Joe Middeler who have coached the Lions swimmers for a combined 50 years.

Judy Middeler is in her 36th year as swim team coach while her brother Joe is in his 14th season.

“I think they know how we feel about them,” said New Richmond athletic director Doug Foote.

“I’m not a New Richmond person but there’s something special about this place when you look back and see the Ron Birds (33 years as football coach) and Ron Reids who coach here for 30 years. People stay here forever and ever because of the quality of people they work with. Thank you Middelers, you are the best.“

Former New Richmond swimmers Mark Miller and Alex Lewis spearheaded the fund drive that raised $7500 for the new scoreboard. Among the groups making donations were the New Richmond High School PTO, Girl Scout troup 48026, River Hills Bank and the New Richmond Sports Foundation.

“They are not only great coaches, they’re great people and great mentors,” said Miller. “Granted they may have taught everyone in New Richmond how to swim, but that’s not all of the story. They have been involved with Special Olympics and the Village Food Pantry. They reach out to the community and if someone needs help they will be there to help.”

New Richmond High School will hold its 'Fight for Nate' benefit from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the high school to benefit the ‘Nate Kramer Medical Fund’.

The benefit will be preceded at 12:30 p.m. by the dedication of the new swim scoreboard honoring the Middeler family. Judy Middeler is entering her 36th year as the Lady Lions swim coach. Her brother Joe is in his 14th year as coach of the boys swim team.

Kramer, a 2007 graduate and record-holding swimmer, was diagnosed with Leukemia last June following the completion of his collegiate swimming career at the University of Cincinnati.

After giving up basketball in middle school, Kramer switched to swimming and went on to set school records in the 200-meter and 500-meter freestyles, the 200 Individual Medley and the 100-meter backstroke and won a scholarship to swim for UC.

The Dec. 18 event will be held throughout New Richmond High School and will include:

 Zumba-thon in the school gym; $5 per hour of Zumba

 Swim-a-thon in the school pool; $5 per hour open swim

 "Money Tree" Donate dollars for Nate. Take an ornament and donate a dollar.

 Live Christmas Tree sale.

 Raffle/silent auction featuring such items as a Suite for 12 at a Cyclones hockey game and a huge UC duffel bag full of UC spirit gear donated by the UC swim team. A Christmas tree with ornaments wil be raffled off with tickets for $1 or 12 for $10.

 Haircuts for $5 by Tonya Powell with all the proceeds to Nate

 Bake sale in school lobby. Small baked goods as well as whole cakes and goodie baskets perfect for the holiday season. Prices range from $.50-$30.

The Varsity Girls Basketball team defeated Bethel Tate last night 59-42 in a game that broke a 1st place tie in the SBAAC-American Division. The Lady Lions' defense slowed down the track-meet style of basketball Bethel-Tate likes to play, limiting their transition opportunities. Josie Buckingham led the way on offense scoring a career-high 35 points while adding 11 rebounds and 5 blocks. Sophomore Bailey Workman added 13 points and 3 assists. Sarah Shoemaker contributed in many ways while providing key ball handling and contributing 4 assists, 4 blocks, 5 rebounds, and 3 steals. The Lion Basketball program has been very busy this past week. The varsity team has played 4 games in the past 7 days and the freshman and JV teams have also played three games a piece.
The lions varsity team sits at 2-3 after losing two consecutive tough games to good teams in Newport and Norwood. The lions varsity sits at 1-0 in the SBC after beating rival CNE Friday night by a score of 52-43. Leading the way for the Lions were Senior Nick Hill with 15 points and Junior Austen Craig with 10 points. Senior Tucker Hawkins came off the bench and did a great job defensively on one of CNE's main scorers. Senior Jake Gundler pitched in 9.
The lions followed the win with a tough loss at Newport on Saturday. Leading the way for the Lions was Junior Evan McKinley with 9 points.
The Lions traveled to Norwood Tuesday night trying to improve on their game from Saturday. Norwood's athleticism caused too many turnovers for the lions that transpired into easy transition points for the Indians. Leading the way for the Lions were Junior Evan McKinley who hit for a career high 19 points on 7-8 shooting from the field. Nick Hill added 7 points and 3 assists.
The Lions travel to Amelia on Friday night to try to improve their league record to 2-0.

The JV Boys basketball team improved to 3-1 on Tuesday night by beating a solid Norwood JV team.

Lady Lions off to 5-0 Start

The Lady Lions Varsity Girls Basketball team improved their record to 5-0 last night defeating visiting Norwood 51-42. After trailing at half-time and by as many as 9 in the 3rd quarter, the girls clawed back in the 2nd half for the 2nd straight game to overcome the hot-shooting Norwood team. Sophomores Bailey Workman and Josie Buckingham led the offensive charge scoring 13 points each while freshman Tina Lawrence added 9. The Lady Lions play their biggest game of the season on Thursday vs. Bethel-Tate, a game that will break a 1st place tie in the SBAAC-American.

What an electric atmosphere at NRHS Friday afternoon! The Lions did battle with the Glen Este Trojans during an in-school dual. The Lions coming off a tournament win at Roger Bacon and the Trojans coming off a tournament win at Harrison. The expectations were high on both sides of the mat.

Brody Hooks started off the match with a pin, making a statement for the Lions. Nathan Rostetter followed with a hard fought loss. Austin Skaggs got the Lions back in the win column with a first period pin. Cody Gabelman followed Austin's lead and pinned his GE opponent. Tyler Loyd attempted to keep the streak alive but came up short. Ryan Zawacki lost in overtime in an exciting match. Kyle Weeks made his varsity debut and came up four points short. Corey English was beat in the last six seconds of the match. Kevin Reid took the action to the Trojan wrestler and came away with a pin! Luke Hoskins may have had the match of the day. Luke was down 19-13 with abut a minute left when he threw his opponent to his back and got the pin with only seconds remaining! Ryle Beckerich went the distance but lost by decision. Nathan Dixon gave his best but came up short in the end. JR Forsee received a forfeit. The team score was 36-34 Lions going into the last match. AJ Rostetter had the weight of the world on his shoulders. AJ was working hard and giving his all but fell to the GE opponent. Final score Lions 36 Trojans 40.

Some of you may not have seen the JV action afterwards. Robbie Lemar and Autumn Clark pinned their opponents in the first period. Great job guys!

Next up for the Varsity Lions is the Coaches Classic 12/17 & 12/18 @ Harrison High School. This is the premier tournament in Cincinnati, only the best will survive! The JV travels to Bethel 12/17 for the Bethel Invitational. WE ARE NR!

Lady Lions Roar Back vs Amelia

The Varsity Lady Lions Basketball Team pulled off a stunning come-from-behind victory last night @ Amelia 37-36. After trailing by double-figures in the 4th quarter the girls refused to give up and clawed back using the half-court trapping defense to win the critical 4th quarter 16-4 to cap off the 1 point win. The comeback was fueled defensively by by seniors Courtney Grogan, Sarah Shoemaker, and Mikaela Rupp and Freshman Tina Lawrence who applied the pressure causing multiple turnovers and tie-ups. Josie Buckingham scored a game-high 14 points including 8 in the final period to spark the Lions offensively. Sarah Shoemaker chipped in 11 points while Courtney Grogan added two clutch jumpers in the 2nd Half. It was an exciting come-back and a great division win for the Lady Lions who play next at home Monday vs Norwood.

3rd Straight Win for Girls Basketball

The Lady Lions Varsity Girls Basketball Team won its 3rd straight game last night defeating visiting Felicity-Franklin last night 40-15 to start the season 3-0. Senior Camie Keets became the 3rd different Lady Lion in 3 games to lead the team in scoring with 11 points. Josie Buckingham controlled the paint collecting 14 rebounds to go with her 8 points and 5 blocked shots. The girls' unrelenting defense created many easy baskets for the cause while contributing to fast transition offense. The Lady Lions are next @ Amelia Thursday, Dec. 8 in a another tough road division game.

JV Wrestling team has success at Wilmington Tournament.

Coach Minor took the JV team to Wilmington Saturday. The Lions were led by Robbie Lemar and James White who placed first. Tristan Williams and Jay Troy placed third. The Lions had ten wrestlers in the final round but the tournament only placed the top three. overall coach Minor thought it was a great start to a long season. Next up for the Lions is the school dual Friday, both JV and Varsity will wrestle Glen Este. WE ARE NR!

Varsity Wrestling team wins the Roger Bacon Duals

The Lions started yesterday morning with a 79-0 victory over host Roger Bacon, yes that is 14 matches and 14 wins! Next up for the Lions was Talawanda and the result was similar to the first round, Lions 74-3 victory. That placed the Lions in the medal round against Reading and Oak Hills. Reading, currently ranked #3 in the city, turned out to be a tough match. The Lions went into the final match down by one team point but JR Forsee stood between Reading and victory. JR would not be denied, he pinned the Reading opponent in the second period, Lions win, Lions win! Oak Hills was the next opponent for the Lions. The match was very competitive but in the end the Lions proved to be too much, Lions 63-10. The next round featured an SBAAC opponent, Batavia. The Lions finished the day strong with a 63-19 victory over the Bulldogs and securing the team title!

Leading the way for the Lions was Brody Hooks, Austin Skaggs, Tyler Loyd, Ryan Zawacki and Jr Forsee, all going 5-0 on the day! Cody Gabelman, Clay Loadman, Cory English and Kevin Reid all went 4-1 Saturday. Nathan Dixon went 3-1, Luke Hoskins went 2-0 until his injury prevented him from competing the last three matches. Ryle Beckerich went 1-0, Justin Patrick went 3-2, AJ Rostetter went 3-2 and Nathan Rostetter contributed with two victories.

The Lions are currently ranked #2 in the city poll and #7 in the state poll. The potential is high for the team this year but only hard work and determination will determine the outcome! WE ARE NR!

Boys Basketball vs Ripley 12/2/11

The Lions varsity basketball team lost a tough battle against Ripley high school 57-55 on Friday night. The lions played from behind most of the night, but continued to battle and made numerous runs to even the score several times. However, the great effort fell short in the last few minutes. Leading the way for the Lions were sophomore John Ernst with 14 points and 13 rebounds; Senior Chris Turner with 9 points and 7 rebounds; Junior Evan McKinley 8 points; and Junior Austen Craig with 7 points. The lions will attempt to rebound from the loss by playing host to Felicity Franklin Tuesday night @ 7:30.

The JV Boys won their game against Ripley by a score of 59-45. Leading the way for the Lions were Sophomore Josh Heiden 15 points, Caleb Hayward 11 points, Blake Thompson and Dylan Adams with 10 points.

The Freshman boys basketball team lost their season opener to Ripley on Friday night. Jake Craig led the frosh with 16 points. Chris Mazzaro and Alex Sharp each had 8 points.

The NR Lady Lions Basketball team opened their season in winning fashion on their home court last night vs Mariemont 49-23. The girls were led by a dominating performance by Josie Buckingham who led all scorers with 23 points and also had 14 rebounds and 8 blocks. Seniors Sarah Shoemaker and Mikaela Rupp added 8 points each providing clutch scoring from the perimeter. The girls' stingy team defense was key holding the visiting team to 8 total field goals and 3 points in the 3rd quarter. The Lady Lions open SBAAC play on Thursday @ CNE at 730.

Cody Gabelman, Tyler Loyd and JR Forsee go undefeated at Graham High School wrestling preview Saturday night. Cody dominated his opponent with an impressive 8-2 victory. Tyler "escaped" with a 1-0 victory, scoring the only point in the second period. JR controlled the action from start to finish with a 3-0 win.

Next up for the Varsity Wrestling Lions is the Roger Bacon Duals Saturday, December 3 @ 10am. The Lions are lead by ten seniors and look to three-peat as SBAAC League and Sectional Champs! The road starts Saturday and ends in Columbus at the state meet in March!

The Junior Varsity Wrestling Lions begin the season Saturday also. They will travel to Wilmington, action starts at 10am. Coach Minor expects to have a strong team and continue the winning tradition at New Richmond! WE ARE NR!

Second event to benefit Nate Kramer

New Richmond High School has added a second event on Dec. 18 to benefit the ‘Nate Kramer Medical Fund’. Kramer, a 2007 graduate and record-holding swimmer, was diagnosed with Leukemia last June following the completion of his collegiate swimming career at the University of Cincinnati.

After being cut from basketball in middle school, Kramer switched to swimming and went on to set school records in the 200-meter and 500-meter freestyles, the 200 Individual Medley and the 100-meter backstroke and won a scholarship to swim for UC.

The first benefit will be held at the high school pool after school on Nov. 22 featuring the high school swimming team joining the University of Cincinnati swim team in holding a “Ted Mullin Hour of Power” cancer awareness swim relay from 3 to 4 p.m. The swim relay is open to the public which is encouraged to make a donation to the fund.

“The Nov. 22 event will only be open to NR swimmers, not the general public,” said event organizer Sue Griffin. “We're saving the public swim until our ‘Fight for Nate’ benefit on Dec. 18.”

The Dec. 18 event will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. and New Richmond High School and will include:

 Zumba-thon in the school gym; $5 per hour of Zumba
 Swim-a-thon in the school pool; $5 per hour open swim
 Bake sale in school lobby. Small baked goods as well as whole cakes and goodie baskets perfect for the holiday season. Prices range from $.50-$30.
 Music Video festival in the school theatre from 4-5p.m. Students in the Poetry in Rock Music and TV production classes made music videos and we picked the best ones to show. $5 admission
 Vendors in the school cafeteria, including Avon, Mary Kay, Silpada, Pampered Chef, Longaberger baskets, New Richmond Alpaca Farm, and many other local crafters and artisans. All vendors are donating at least 15% of their sales to Nate’s family. The perfect opportunity for those last-minute shoppers!
 Pictures with Santa in the cafeteria; we’ll have Santa available for photos with kids of all ages. Cost is expected to be $5-10. We will also have two Newfoundland dogs dressed up for Christmas who will also be available for photos.
 Raffle/silent auction. Many, many great items have been donated that would make great Christmas gifts for others or yourself.
 Hoxworth Blood Drive in the school library. Anyone able and willing to donate blood may participate.
 Swim caps for sale ($5) with the event logo.
 T-shirts for sale ($10) with the event logo.

New Richmond High School will join the University of Cincinnati swim team in “The Ted Mullin Hour of Power” cancer awareness swim relay from 3 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22 to benefit the Nate Kramer Medical Fund.

Boys soccer advances in tournament play

The boys defeated CNE last night in sectional tournament play by the score of 2-1. New Richmond started out strong with numerous shots on goal that did not find the back of the net. After a scoreless un-eventful first half the second half would not be the same. After an altercation that resulted in a CNE player to be ejected, CNE score the games first goal off of a re-start. The Lions found themselves down 1-0 with just less then 20:00 left to play and the bad weather moved in delaying the game. At 8:10 the officials gave the go ahead to take the field. After making some adjustments the boys came out ready to play. Sam Lefler scored the equalizer and Tyler Loyd scored the go ahead goal and secured the victory. The Lions face McNicholas Saturday at 3:00.

Girls varsity soccer team advance in tournament

The girls varsity soccer team defeated Bethel in the first round of the tournament on Monday night advancing the team to the next round. Scoring for the Lady Lions was Bailey Workman with two goals, and Lexy Stamper with one goal. Assists were made by Sarah Glenn and Bethany Smith. The Lions will play McNick (seeded #2) on Thursday, October 20th at 5pm at McNick.

Lions continue to win championships

Congratulations to our fall teams and athletes as they continue to win in the SBAAC. A couple of weeks ago our golf team led by coach of the year Phil Heflin won the League Championship. This Friday 10/14 our football team led by Coach Dan Scholz wrapped up their second straight league championship with their win over Goshen 34-14 and Western Browns loss at Ameila.

Then this saturday 10/15 led by Coach Rylan Shebesta our boys cross country team won their second straight league championship in a huge way at the league cross country meet at Western Brown.

On top of this success our boys soccer team played for the league championship at Ameila coming up short in a 1-0 loss in what has been a great year for our Coach Doug Flamm led soccer team. Also at the cross country meet our girls team missed winning the league by two points and finished second. Great job to all of our teams.

The girls varsity soccer team defeated Bethel 3-0 for the last regular season game. Cassidy Martin earned her second shut out for the season with the help from the defense. Scoring for the Lions was Savannah Glenn with an assist by Kelsey Hensley, and Kelsey Hensley with two goals with an assist from Courtney Grogan. The team's final conference record was 4-4-2 with an overall record of 5-8-2. The team looks to play Bethel at Bethel for the first tournament game on Monday, October 17th at 7pm.

THE VARSITY AND JV FOOTBALL TEAMS BOTH HAD VICTORIES OVER AMEILA. THE VARSITY OFFENSE WAS AGAIN LED BY NICK HILL WHO CARRIED THE BALL 12 TIMES FOR 141 YARDS AND 3 TD'S. NICK ALSO HAD A 75 YARD OPENING KICK OFF RETURN FOR A TD. JAY GLUECK CARRIED THE BALL 13 TIMES FOR 136 YARDS AND HAD A TD TO ALSO PUSH THE OFFENSE. MATT FORSEE CAUGHT A 41 YARD TD PASS FROM JAKE GUNDLER. THE DEFENSE WAS LED BY DANNY SCHOLZ WHO HAD 15 TACKLES AND AN INTERCEPTION. JAKE GUNDLER AND JAY GLUECK ALSO HAD INTERCEPTIONS, AND KEVIN SCHOLZ HAD A FUMBLE RECOVERY.

THE JV FOOTBALL TEAM ELIMINATED THE TURNOVERS AND PENALTIES THAT HAVE PLAGUED THEM THE LAST FEW WEEKS AND PUT TOGETHER AN IMPRESSIVE VICTORY SATURDAY MORNING.

THE FRESHMAN FOOTBALL TEAM TRAVELED TO CINCINNATI HILLS CHRISTIAN ACADEMY FOR A GAME, AND AFTER A SLOW START FOR THE LIONS, THEY PLAYED A VERY GOOD SECOND HALF IN A TOUGH DEFEAT.

Lion Golfers Attack Sectional Golf Tournament: Austin Wells Qualifies for Districts

The Lion Golfers traveled to Glenview Golf Course on Tuesday to play in the Division I Sectional Tournament. This was the Lions first year participating in Division I and they fared well as a team. There were 16 teams playing in the Sectional and the Lions shot a 354 which was good enough to place in 7th place in the tough field. Leading the Lions in scoring was District Qualifier Austin Wells who shot a solid 81 to pace the team. Also scoring and playing well for the Lions were Chris Mazzaro (90), Evan McKinley (91), Austin Skaggs (92), and Henry Heidlage (102). Austin will tee it up on Wednesday October 12th in the District Golf Tournament to be held at Weatherwax Golf Course. The teams final record for the season was 68-11. Congratulations on a job well done this season men.

Madison Holdsworth recorded the shut-out in the goal with the help of the defense Christin Gray, Juliane Molitor, Madeline Farmer, Emma Feld, Britney O’brien, Audrey Feiler, and Alexis Meyer. Goals were scored by Hannah Hall, Grace Jaehnen, and Katelyn Chumley with assists by Grace Jaehnen, Logan Smith, and Andi Bateman. Midfielders Alex Shultz and April Schmidt also had a tremendous game. Go Lions!

Lion Golfers Knocked Off By The Rams

The Lion Golfers traveled to Potters Park in Hamilton on Thursday night for a match with the Division II District Qualifier , Hamilton Badin Rams. The Lion played well on a tough course , but came up alittle short in a 163-170 defeat. Senior Austin Skaggs was the Medalist for the match, firing a one over par 37 followed by Freshman Chris Mazzaro with a 40. Also scoring for the Lions were Henry Heidlage (44), Evan McKinley (48), Austin Wells (49), and David Ohntrup (53). The Lions will tee it up in the Division I Sectional Tournament held at Glenview Golf Course on Tuesday October 4th. The Lions record nows stands at 58-7 on the season.

The very physical game ended with CHCA scoring from two direct kicks given to CHCA from penalties from outside the box. Scoring for the Lady Lions was Sarah Glenn, who launched a goal into the left-upper corner pocket in the second half. The girls will take a week break, playing their next game against Goshen on Tuesday, October 4th at 7pm.

Two Volleyball Wins for Homecoming Week!!

Last night the volleyball team defeated Clermont Northeastern to open up the second round of league play. The offense was lead by Eleanor Wildey and Sarah Shoemaker with 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Hannah Lang had 22 assists. The team's serving was lead by Sarah Shoemaker, Eleanor Wildey and Ann Bishop with 3 aces each. It was a great team effort by all.

Tonight the team defeated Clark Montessori in 5 games. Eleanor Wildey lead the team with 19 kills. Hannah Lang had 26 assists and 17 digs. Camie Keets lead the serving with 5 aces. Jessica Mowery had the team's only block. The lady lions don't play again until next Tuesday.

For the first time since 1998 the New Richmond Golfers find themselves on top of the S.B.A.A.C. golf leader board. The Lions outdistanced second place Amelia by 42 strokes to secure the victory at Cedar Trace Golf Course on Saturday. The final scores were: New Richmond (959), Amelia (1001), Western Brown (1109), Bethel (1115), C.N.E. (1172), and Goshen (1356). The Lions will continue their season on Thursday with a match against Hamilton Badin and Talawanda at Potters Park in Hamilton. The Lions will tee it up at the O.H.S.A.A. Sectional Golf Tournament on October 4th. The Lions record now sits at 58-6 on the season. GREAT JOB MEN!!!!
